Senate orders police to chase out prostitutes from Abuja

The Senate has ordered security agencies in the FCT to get rid of beggars, prostitutes and the destitute from the streets of the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

This was disclosed by the chairman, Senate committee on FCT, Senator Dino Melaye, at a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, February 23.

Melaye informed journalists that his committee invited the police commissioner and commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to brief them about the growing insecurity in the FCT and the need to take steps to curb the trend.

His words: “Last week we summoned the commissioner of police FCT and the commandant of NSCDC because as a committee and the Senate we are appalled with the security situation in Abuja.
“We are also very uncomfortable with the number of hoodlums on the streets of Abuja. We have beggars, destitute prostitutes spread across every nook and cranny of the city and we have given a marching order to the commissioner of police and the commandant of NSCDC to clear them.
“We have also instructed the FCT to provide logistics for the immediate evacuation of all dissidents, beggars including those little boys who claim they are helping you to clean your glass by so doing they are adding additional dents to your cars.”
Melaye also said the Senate had reached an agreement with commercial banks operating in the FCT on the cleaning and maintenance of roads in the Abuja metropolis.

Part of the deal is for the banks to fix streetlights and beautify the streets in fulfilment of their corporate social responsibility.

Melaye stated that if corporate organisations were in charge of the maintenance of public facilities, it would be better done because the name of the companies and their brands would be at stake.
“And we are also going to save a lot for government, which can now be used for other developmental purposes,” he added.
Since open prostitution was banned in Abuja in June 2013, prostitues in the FCT have devised various means to meet with their prostitues in the FCT have devised various means to meet with their 'customers'.
