NFF Chief Reveals Why Super Eagles Are Flying Again


The Super Eagles are flying again thanks to the young blood coach Gernot Rohr has injected into the team, according to top NFF chief Seyi Akinwunmi.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Dele Alampasu, Musa Mohammed and Kingsley Madu are all under 20.

The average age of the starting Eagles XI in Zambia last month was 25.

The factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has declared that the party had no other candidate for the November 26 governorship election other than Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim.

Ibrahim was declared the candidate of the party by the Independent National Electoral Commission, following the order of the Abuja High Court. Though the candidate of Ahmed Makarfi’s faction, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, had approached the appeal court to challenge the action of the INEC.

JAMB to reduce 180 cut-off mark


There are strong indications that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) may approve the reduction of 180 cut-off mark for admission to tertiary institutions.

The Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, who made the disclosure during the 2nd Technical Committee Meeting for 2016 Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria, at the Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, stated that the decision became imperative as a result of the inability of some of the institutions to implement the cut-off mark.

Greece out of Economic recession


The Greek economy emerged from recession for the first time since 2014, managing two straight quarters of GDP growth, figures released Monday showed.

Greece’s gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 0.5 percent in the three months to September from the previous quarter, and by 1.5 percent from the third quarter of 2015, statistics bureau Elstat said.

It had already nudged 0.2 percent higher in the second quarter from the first. Two consecutive quarters of growth officially mark the end of a recession.

South Africa | Chinese President’s delegation illegally bought ivory and rhino horn


Members of the Chinese President’s delegation went on an illegal spending spree in South Africa to buy ivory and rhino horn and smuggled the products back to China, according to revelations to be broadcast by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit.

Filming undercover, the Al Jazeera team recorded a Chinese man, who lives in Pretoria and acted as a tour guide for a large delegation which arrived in December 2015 with President Xi Jinping for a Forum on Co-operation between South Africa and China. He claims members of the delegation, including the President’s personal bodyguards, insisted he take them to a black-market dealer to buy rhino horn along with chopsticks, stamps and bracelets made from ivory.  These are all banned items under the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species, of which China is a signatory.

Kano State | Eight Shi’ites members, one policeman die


Eight members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and one policeman have died during a clash between police and members of the sect in Kano on Monday.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Alhaji Rabiu Yusuf, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Kano on Monday.

Yusuf said that four policemen and many members of the Shi’ites were injured during the clash which occurred along Kano-Zaria road in the city.

A prosecution witness, Mrs. Fatima Dauda, on Monday told a Federal High Court that she opened a “Visa Gold Account” for the former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh.

The witness made this known to Justice Okon Abang of the Abuja division of the court while being led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Mr. O.A Atolagbe.

The witness said that an initial deposit of $50,000 was made into the account in two instalments by Badeh’s officers.

The Presidency on Monday raised the alarm over imminent famine in Nigeria from January 2017.

According to a statement made available to journalists, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, raised the alarm in an interview he granted a Kano-based radio station on Monday.

Shehu said despite being Africa’s largest producer of cereals and grains, Nigeria risks famine from early next year following a huge demand in the global market that is targeting the country’s surplus production.

DSTV reduces subscription price across Africa, plans increase in Nigeria


MultiChoice Limited, owners of DStv and GoTV, is set to reduce the monthly DStv subscription fees between 11 percent and 21 per cent from November 1, 2016 in several African countries, EXCLUDING Nigeria.

According to findings, DStv would also add several exciting channels to the lower-tiered bouquets in the black nations to boost the content offering for cheaper packages and add content value. Arik Air blames emergency landing on ‘noisy engine’


The management of Arik Air has said the emergency landing on Friday of its Boeing 737 aircraft flying from Lagos to Jos was due to a noise in one of the engines.

The aircraft, with registration number 5N-MJD, reportedly lost one of its two engines mid-air with over 100 passengers on board.

President Muhammadu Buhari may have bowed to pressure, by agreeing to withdraw the list of 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees recently submitted to the Upper Chamber for screening and confirmation.

Soldier who fakes his own kidnap arrested in Eket


An army officer, Musa Lawal, who was reportedly kidnapped in Calabar last Thursday, allegedly faked his abduction.

Lawal was abducted around 10am after leaving a bank along Calabar Road in the Cross River State capital by his cronies, according to a security source.

SHOCKING! Driver disappears as truck ran seven to death in Ibadan


A driver of an articulated vehicle at the weekend lost control at the New Garage area of Ibadan, Oyo State, crushing no fewer than seven persons to death.

Five people also sustained life-threatening injuries during the fatal auto mishap.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, told newsmen that only two people died, while four others sustained injuries.

Power failure halts event with VP Osinbajo on seat in Minna

Super Eagles match bonuses to be paid into players’ accounts


Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), have assured that they have received approval for $10,000 bonus to be paid to each Super Eagles player, for their victories against Zambia and Algeria.

However, the monies will be transferred into their accounts.

Each member of the squad is expected to be paid N350,000 as training camp allowance for the Algeria game after it was increased from N20,000 to N50,000 for each day.
