Abia crisis: Attorney-General says INEC lied, confirms they were served notice of appeal

Contrary to claims by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that they did not receive any Notice of Appeal from Governor Okezie Ikpeazu or an injunction stopping the Commission from issuing a Certificate of Return to Dr. Uche Ugah, the Attorney General of Abia State, Mr. Umeh Kalu, has said that INEC lied in its claims.

A proof service has shown that the Commission did indeed receive the two important documents and it was signed for by Saleh N. Ibrahim, Senior Clerical Officer at the Legal Services Department of the Commission's Headquarters, Abuja, who stamped the Notice of Appeal and Injunction with the Commission's official stamp by 12.50pm on Wednesday, June 29, 2016.

School Management Expel Eight Girls From School After They Got Pregnant


Eight girls from a school in Elgeyo-Marakwet a county in Kenya have been expelled after the school management discovered they had fallen pregnant. Moi Girls Kapsowar High School in Elgeyo-Marakwet county expelled the girls on grounds that they are likely to pull down the school’s mean grade. Among them are three from four candidates who are also said to have been de-registered by the school for fear that they will affect its performance in this year’s national examinations. The parents have expressed their disappointment as their plans secure a bright future for their children has been dashed.

Say What! Primary School Teacher Impregnates Class Four Pupil


A shocking incident has thrown pupils and teachers of a primary school into a state of bewilderment after a  teacher at a primary school in Laikipia North allegedly impregnated a Class Four pupil in Kenya.

According to News24, the pupil informed the school Guidance and Counseling teacher, who has since been transferred from the school, that the male teacher made her pregnant. The case was also reported to police and education officers in the sub-County.

The education officers including the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Laikipia County director, Abubakar Hassan visited the school several times to investigate the matter.

58-year-old Mzee Selemia Ayeko Wandago from Likoni, Mombasa County, Kenya married Phyllis Okisa, 64, a woman he had been secretly admiring close to four decades.
"Finding true love has not been easy, especially after I parted ways with my first wife with whom we bore two sons (now grown-ups) and my second wife who passed away, leaving me with three young children,"  says Ayeko whose wife from his second marriage died while giving birth.
 Ayeko says they knew each other decades ago when Okisa regularly came visiting her sister, who was married to the former’s uncle. The two love birds confessed that at some point they got attracted to each other, but could not date for fear of stigma associated with relative (however distant) who fall in love.

Prisoners who escaped from Kuje prison re-arrested


Maxwell Ajukwu and Solomon Amodu, the two prisoners that escaped from Kuje Prison Abuja last Friday, June 24th, have been re-arrested. 

According to Sahara Reporters, prison officials confirmed the re-arrest of the two inmates and said they are currently being detained at the Department of State Security's office in Abuja. The prison officials did not state where or how the inmates were caught.

Court to rule on FFK's bail application on July 4th over alleged N4.9bn fraud

Nigerian is ranked third in mobile online shopping worldwide, a report by Paypal has said. PayPal is the most popular way Nigerians pay for cross-border online purchases and 55 percent of Nigerian cross-border shoppers have used the platform for purchases in the past 12 months. According to PayPal, the country’s consumers spent N128.1 billion in 2015 via online shopping, targeting N172 billion by the end of this year.

The Delta State House of Assem­bly Thursday in Asaba, approved life im­prisonment for any per­son convicted of kidnap­ping in the state.

This was a fallout of an amendment of the Delta State Anti-Kidnapping Law 2016.

The state Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa in a letter to the House, had appealed for reconsider­ation of Section 4, Sub-Section 1 of the Delta State Anti-Kidnapping Law, 2016 as passed by the House, which made provision for death pen­alty.

Ondo State Workers calls off Strike after reaching Agreement With State Government


Workers in Ondo State have suspended their 30-day-old strike after labour leaders signed an agreement with the state government late on Thursday, June 30, 2016.

According to the chairman of the state’s labour union, Joint Negotiating Council, Mr. Sunday Adeleye under the agreement, the Ondo State government is expected to pay just January salary for workers in the mainstream, and January and February salaries to local government workers and primary school teachers on grade level 1 to 10

Adeleye added that local government workers and primary school teachers on level 12 and above will take one month, health workers 2 months, while OSOPADEC workers will get 3-months salary that will be paid in cash.

Missing Babcock University Student Allegedly Kidnapped by Friends Who request Ransom from Her Family Members


Justina Anochie, a Babcock University graduate, has reportedly been abducted by friends who wanted to make money off her family, Punch reports.

According to the publication, the 27-year-old, who completed her nursing course in May and graduated this June, was abducted on Sunday.

Already, the Ogun State Police Command has arrested a University of Lagos undergraduate who has reportedly been linked to the kidnap. She is currently helping the police with investigations.

Speaking with the press, Anochie’s sister Judith Nze, said the kidnappers demanded N10 million and later asked for N5 million. They refused the family’s offer of N300,000 and have promised to kill the young graduate if their demands are not met.

Taiwanese warship mistakenly fires missile towards China


A Taiwanese warship has mistakenly launched a supersonic “aircraft carrier killer” missile towards China, the navy said, as ties between the island and its once bitter rival deteriorate.

The domestically developed Hsiung-feng III missile flew about 45 miles before plunging into waters off Penghu, a Taiwanese-administered island group in the Taiwan Strait.

The Taiwanese navy said it was not immediately clear how the missile had come to be launched, but suggested it could have been due to human error. “Our initial investigation found that the operation was not done in accordance with normal procedure,” vice-admiral Mei Chia-shu told reporters, adding that an investigation was under way.

Pato and Falcao depart following the expiration of their loan deals from Corinthians and Monaco respectively.

Transfer News: Nolito complete move to Manchester City from Celta Vigo


Pep Guardiola has made Nolito his second major signing as Manchester City coach, with the Spain forward joining from Celta Vigo for around £14m.

Obama to quickly move to the rescue of Puerto Rico major debt payment


As Puerto Rico faces a major debt payment, President Barack Obama is vowing to move quickly to sign a last-minute rescue package for the financially-strapped U.S. territory and its 3.5 million Americans.

In a rare election-year feat, the White House-backed legislation passed with strong bipartisan support in Congress. The Senate voted 68-30 for the legislation on Wednesday, three weeks after the House approved the measure.

United States Military lifts ban on Transgender Personnel


Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on Thursday lifted the ban on transgender personnel from openly serving in the US military.
"This is the right thing to do for our people and for the force," Carter said in a statement.
"We're talking about talented Americans who are serving with distinction or who want the opportunity to serve. We can't allow barriers unrelated to a person's qualifications prevent us from recruiting and retaining those who can best accomplish the mission."

Former President GEJ mourns Ojo Maduekwe, Elechi Amadi


Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has lamented the death of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Ojo Maduekwe and foremost writer, Elechi Amadi, describing the exit of both elder statesmen as a sad loss for the country.

The former President who stated this in separate messages of condolence to the families of the deceased emphasised that both men made significant contributions to Nigeria’s growth and development. Jonathan described Chief Maduekwe as “a nationalist, foremost administrator and intellectual giant who contributed so much to the task of nation building.”
