On Thursday, Gymnast Simone Biles was received at the White House. The 19-year-old Olympian was honored alongside other 2016 US Summer Olympic and Paralympic teams.

The event was also attended by relatives of Jesse Owen (American track and field athlete and four-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1936 games) and America’s other black athletes from the 1936 Olympics for the acknowledgement they -unlike their white counterparts- were denied of by Franklin Roosevelt 80 years ago.

Independence from colonial rule in 1960 has brought the country so much to be cheerful about, but 56 years later, also a lot of regrets. I am not one of those who imagine that we would probably have been better off if we had remained under British rule, but that there are some Nigerians who still entertain such impossible thought indicates the depth of the people’s anxiety about Nigeria’s post-colonial reality. The big issues are well-known: the failure of leadership, corruption, and perpetual anxiety about the future. Every October 1, Nigeria is described as “a crippled giant”, a “toddler”, “a broken nation”. And the various editorials, year after year sound so repetitive as they focus on an economy that is not working, the failure of public infrastructure, leadership crisis, the bad habits of the political elite, religious and ethnic violence, disunity, national insecurity, and so on.

Nigeria records huge success in battle against HIV/AIDS

Nigeria has scored a major success in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has announced.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NACA said Nigeria has moved from a high prevalence rate of over 5.8 % in the year 2001 to less than 3% prevalence rate in 2014. This means less than 3% tested for the virus in selected areas of the country are infected.

Notwithstanding, NACA said HIV\AIDS still remains an epidemic.

The Director General of the Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, has said the actualisation of the Republic of Biafra is no longer feasible.

Three Nigerians men and a woman, together with eleven other accomplices currently on the run, were charged in the Court of First Instance on Thursday, September 29th, with attacking two Pakistani men and robbing them of millions in different currencies, belonging to their employer.

The 11 others on the run, including another woman, are being accused in the same case of possessing the stolen money.  The defendants, all Nigerians are currently in detention.

Man bags death sentence for killing his girlfriend on Valentine's Day

A 33-year-old engineer who murdered his girlfriend on Valentine's Day three years ago has been sentenced to death.

High Court Judicial Commissioner Collin Lawrence Sequerah said the accused, Cheong Teik Keon, was found guilty of killing Tan Ching Chin, 24, a clerk, was accused of committing the offence against Tan at her home at No. 2703, Taman Hwa Seng, Jalan Rozhan, Alma, in Bukit Mertajam, Malaysia, at about 8.40am on Feb 14, 2013.

An elderly agent of the All Progressives Congress, APC, reportedly slumped and died on Wednesday, at a polling unit in Abico Market unit 10 ward eight in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. 

The deceased identified as Mr. Solomon Omorogbe, 58, left his house to his polling unit early in the morning where he was to serve as a polling agent for the just concluded gubernatorial election.

Gender Equality bill passes second reading at the senate

The Gender Equality Opportunity (GEO) Bill which suffered major setback in March this year, passed for second reading at the senate today September 29th.

The bill which is being sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi, seeks to amongst other things address women's freedom of movement, female economic activity, girls' access to education, equal rights for women in marriage, divorce, property/land ownership and inheritance, appropriate measures against gender discrimination in political and public life and prohibitions of violence to women.
