Police explain why they arrested ex-Boko Haram spokesman,


The Borno State Police command has said that it arrested former self-acclaimed spokesman of Boko Haram, Ali Sanda Umar Konduga, for criminal trespass and not terrorism.

In a statement signed and issued to Journalists yesterday in Maiduguri by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) , DSP Victor Isuku, the police said contrary to Wide report of the incident linking terrorism by social Media and print as well, it decided to state the facts for the avoidance of doubts.

According to the PPRO, the suspect was arrested after trespassing on the home of Sen Ali Ndume uninvited, where he was alleged to have been Manhandled and assaulted by Mob before he was brought to the station.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was about 3 years ago convicted and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment for complicity in Boko Haram terrorists activities investigated by defunct JTF.
“On the day of the incident, Ali Sanda Umar Konduga has gone to the house of Sen . Ali Ndume uninvited , where he was alleged to have been manhandled and assaulted , after which the complainant , Mohammed Kala , quickly alerted the wife of the senator who reportedly directed him to go and lodge a formal complaint of criminal trespass against the suspect.
“In this instance, a case of criminal trespass was reported and in pursuance of our constitutional mandate , we are duty bound to investigate it regardless of the status of the complainant. In the meantime, the suspect, Ali Sanda Konduga is under Observation at a psychiatric hospital in the state based on his abnormal behaviour and incoherent statements“, said DSP Victor Isuku.
