EFCC Finally Releases Popular Blogger After 36hrs in Detention


An Abuja-based political blogger and publisher of Abusidiqu.com, Abubakar Sidiq, who was in the early hours of Monday, August 8, 2016, arrested by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for a reported publication on his website, has been released.

The anti-graft agency, EFCC later released a statement on Monday, on the reason why it arrested the blogger which caused an uproar online.

"The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC today arrested Mr. Abubakar Sidiq Usman, a blogger, for offences bordering on cyber stalking.
"The suspect has already been offered administrative bail and would be released to his elected sureties," a statement from EFCC read in part.
 The lawyer to the politicial blogger, Michael Bello, has confirmed that his client has been released after spending more than 36 hours in EFCC custody for 'alleged cyberstalking.'

He added that Abubakar Usman was released on 'an administrative bail' with conditions that 'he must make himself available to the EFCC whenever he received an invitation to such effect.'
“I can confirm to you that my client has just been released on bail. He is very grateful to Nigerians for voicing out against his detention,” Bello said in a brief telephone conversation with Premium Times.
