Breaking | Federal High Court Affirms Sheriff As PDP Chairman 48Hours After INEC Backed Makarfi

A Federal High Court sitting at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, today, Thursday, July 28, 2016, affirmed the former Governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, as the National Chairman of Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Recall Mr. Sheriff had approached the court seeking his authentication as the National Chairman of the PDP after his Committee had been dissolved at the National Convention of the party in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, a situation which gave rise to the former Governor of Kano state, Ahmed Makarfi being the new Acting National Chairman of the PDP.

After Makarfi’s appointment at the party’s convention in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, the PDP approached the court to receive an order which reportedly backed the convention.

But Justice Okon Abang who delivered the judgment today in Abuja, held that since two court orders in Lagos and Abuja affirming Sheriff as National Chairman were still subsisting before another faction rushed to Port-Harcourt to get another order of the Court to back the convention that produced Makarfi, then the order could not stand.
