World Bank Names Rachid Benmessaoud as Director for Nigeria

Rachid Benmessaoud, a former World Bank country director for Pakistan, has been appointed by the bank to support Nigeria’s development priorities, including education and public spending.

Benmessaoud was Monday named as the bank’s new country director for Nigeria and coordinating director for West Africa Regional Integration Programme.

Announcing Benmessaoud appointment, the bank said that the new director would continue to improve the impact of the World Bank’s portfolio in Nigeria to support the government in targeted areas such as power, education, quality of public spending, trade and regional integration.

He has worked on energy, infrastructure, and municipal finance projects in North Africa, Central Europe and South Asia. Benmessaoud joined the bank in 1990 as an energy planner in the then Europe, Middle East and North Africa vice-presidency.

Benmessaoud, who will take up the post on 1 October, replaces Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly, whose tenure ended in July 2015.
