Just In: Niger State Tribunal sacks Zagbayi Nuhu, declares APC David Umaru Winner in Senatorial Election


The National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Minna on Friday declared David Umaru of of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the August 30 election in the Niger East Senatorial District.

 The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Zagbayi Nuhu, was initially declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, after a rerun.
The Commission had declared the election inconclusive due to electoral malpractices.

Mr. Nuhu, a former deputy governor of the state, who polled 92,056 votes to Mr. Umaru’s 87,405 votes, has since taken his seat in the Senate. But the latter challenged the result.

Announcing the bye election was held last August the verdict of the three-member tribunal, its chairman, Justice Ibrahim Bako said Mr. Umaru got 79,779 votes against Mr. Nuhu’s 68,525 votes.

It is not clear if Mr. Nuhu will challenge the result at the Court of Appeal.

If sworn in, Mr. Umaru will only spend four months in the upper legislative chamber. The seat became vacant following the death of its former occupant, Awaisu Kuta.

The outgoing governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, is the PDP candidate for the senatorial district in the February 14 election.
