Controversial Islamic preacher with 86 wives dies in Niger State


Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Masaba, the controversial Islamic preacher and super polygamist, who married 86 wives, is dead.

He was aged 93.

His Personal Assistant, Alhaji Mutairu Salawudeen Bello, who confirmed Masaba’s death, said that the preacher died in his residence in Bida, Niger State, on Saturday, after a brief illness.

A  toddler has been left with devastating burns after she poured her mother's cup of scalding tea over her face.

1-year-old Libbie Patterson had grabbed the mug from a kitchen table at home. And splashed the boiling tea over her head, face, shoulders and back and immediately began screaming in agony.

Her distraught mother called an ambulance and the toddler was rushed to hospital.

She spent three nights being treated for burns but medics hope her face - which was left disfigured - will not be permanently scarred.

Ghana’s only crude oil refinery shut after explosion


Tema Oil Refinery, Ghana’s only oil refinery, has been shut after an explosion at a newly installed €5.8-million crude oil heating unit, a senior union official told Reuters on Friday.

The blast at the crude distillation unit, which recorded no casualties, is the latest problem to hit the refinery, which has for decades performed below its capacity of 45,000 barrels per day.
“It was a damper failure. It failed to open to allow heat to escape through the chimney and that led to the explosion,” one source said.

Junaid Mohammed: Whoever says Boko Haram is dead is telling lies


Anyone who says Boko Haram has been defeated is “telling lies”, Junaid Mohammed, a former supporter-turned-fierce critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, has said.

President Buhari had in December 2016 declared that the stronghold of Boko Haram in Sambisa forest had fallen and the insurgents crushed.
“I want to use this opportunity to commend the determination, courage and resilience of troops of Operation Lafiya Dole at finally entering and crushing the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents at ‘Camp Zero’, which is located deep within the heart of Sambisa forest,” Buhari had said.

Health Minister: Why Nigeria still battles with leprosy


The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, has attributed the prevalence of leprosy in Nigeria, after the country achieved the WHO elimination target in 1998, to pockets of high endemicity in some states.

Mr. Adewole made the remark at a news conference in Umuahia to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the World Leprosy Day Celebration on Friday with the theme: “Zero disability among children affected by leprosy”.

According to him, of 2,892 leprosy cases reported in 2015, nine per cent was made up of children, while victims with “grade II disability” accounted for 15 percent.
