Osun state | Husband and wife sentenced to death by hanging for murder, armed robbery

An Osun State High Court sitting in Ile Ife has sentenced a couple – Fatai Jimoh and Lateefat Jimoh – to death by hanging for armed robbery and the murder of one Mrs. Bukola Taiwo of Ikeketu, Ile Ife.

Taiwo was said to have gone on a business trip to Ile Ife on August 12, 2009, and slept over at the Jimohs’ apartment.

It was learnt that the victim, who was a palm oil dealer, used to come from Ibadan, Oyo State, to buy palm oil at Ile Ife.

United States Govt. announces $92m additional humanitarian assistance for Nigeria


This week, the United States Government announced nearly $92 million in additional humanitarian assistance to people affected by the ongoing conflict and severe food insecurity in Nigeria and throughout the Lake Chad Basin region.

With this announcement, the United States is providing more than $291 million in humanitarian assistance since the 2016 fiscal year to people affected by the Boko Haram-related conflict and the related humanitarian crisis. The United States continues to be the single largest humanitarian donor to the region.

Joseph Yobo bemoans poor treatment of Super Falcons


Former Super Eagles skipper, Joseph Yobo, has expressed his sadness over the poor treatment meted on players of the Super Falcons since they returned from this 2016 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

A Federal High Court in Abuja was unable to proceed with the trial of a former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani- Kayode, as scheduled on Wednesday because of the ex-minister’s ill health.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had on November 11, 2016, arraigned Fani-Kayode on five charges involving alleged diversion of N26m which he allegedly received from the then National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, under the guise of payment for contract.

The ex-minister allegedly received the money from the Office of the National Security Adviser while he was the Director of Media and Publicity in the campaign organisation of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Nigeria Police chief charges officers to monitor Shiites seriously


A police chief has charged officers to monitor the activities of Shiites in a part of Nigeria. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, in charge of Zone One, comprising Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States, Adamu Ibrahim, charged police officers in the zone to remain vigilant and monitor activities of Shiites in the zone.

Mr. Ibrahim gave the charge while addressing officers of Jigawa Police Command in Dutse on Wednesday.

He explained that the recent clash between the Shiites and police in Kano indicated that they were a violent group and must be monitored seriously.

The Nigeria Army on Wednesday said it had rescued additional 605 women and children during its operation in Sambisa forest.

The Theatre Commander, Maj.-Gen. Leo Irabor, stated this during a press conference at the headquarters of the 7 Division of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri.

Photos: Court Orders Senator To Pay N100k Fine For Slapping Newspaper Vendor


A High Court in Uyo has ordered a former senator from Akwa Ibom State, Anietie Okon, to pay N100,000 as damages to a newspaper vendor, Ndifreke Etim, whom he assaulted last year in Uyo, Premium Times reports. 

Mr. Etim, who walks around the city of Uyo, hawking newspapers, had told the court that Mr. Okon slapped him multiple times inside Government House, Uyo, in September last year.

The assault occurred around the state banquet hall where the vendor had gone with the hope of making quick sales during the swearing-in of a new chairman of Akwa Ibom State Council of Traditional Rulers.

Kano State | Authorities cracks down on beggars, arrests 226


The Kano State Hisbah Board arrested 226 beggars for allegedly violating the law banning street begging along the major streets of the state capital in November, an official said on Wednesday.

The officer in charge of the Anti-begging Unit of the board, Malam Musa Sangaya, in Kano said that 119 of the 226 beggars were children, while 107 were adult.

He said, “Our men arrested 226 street beggars around Bata, Naibawa, Nassarawa hospital and Yankaba areas for violating the law banning street begging in Kano metropolis.

Police parades driver who robs passenger at gunpoint


A 35-year-old driver, Felix Jeremiah, who allegedly robbed a female passenger of her belongings at gunpoint, was on Wednesday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused, who is facing a five-count charge of conspiracy, robbery, assault, fraud and stealing, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odigie, told the court that the accused had, on November 27 at about 3p.m. at Oniru Area, Lagos, conspired with two others at large.

The Ondo state governor-elect, Mr. Oluwa Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) today said it will take hard work to surpass the track record put into public service by the state outgoing governor, Olusegun Mimiko.

He noted that Mimiko should be commended for the years he dedicated to public service as two-term commissioner for health, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Minister for Housing and Urban and as a governor.

The governor-elect was speaking during a courtesy visit to Mimiko and some members of his cabinet at the governor’s office at Alagbaka in Akure.
