Gov Obaseki Engage Female Mechanics To Maintain Edo Government Vehicles


Edo state Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has offered to engage female mechanics for the maintenance of government vehicles, it emerged yesterday.

Besides, Governor Obaseki said as part of his administration’s strategic plans for competitive advantage, female drivers and mechanics would be encouraged to study at the Benin Technical College after a complete retooling and rehabilitation.

The Governor who made this disclosure during the graduation ceremony of twenty-five female mechanics in Benin City, Monday, said, “I want to throw an offer to you today - in Government House, we have a workshop. We would like you to come and take a look at it and also see if you can take over maintenance of the vehicles in Government House”

Yakubu Dogara: CBN hindering economic growth with reckless regulations


The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Tuesday said the Central Bank of Nigeria has been making access to credit facility difficult for small and medium scale businesses in the country.

Mr. Dogara said the CBN had unilaterally put in place several regulations that hinder economic growth rather than spur it, promising that the parliament would look at the policies with a view to reversing them.

Nigeria amass over $1.1 billion from tourism in 2015


The Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, NTDC, Sally Mbanefo, on Tuesday said that the tourism sector generated over $1.1 billion in 2015.

Mr. Mbanefo disclosed this during a two-day Nigeria Tourism Investors Forum and Exhibition.

The forum is being organised by the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria, FTAN, in collaboration with NTDC and the National Institute for Hospitality and NIHOTOUR in Abuja.

The theme of the forum is “ Tourism: Tool for Economic and Development.’’

Minister reveals how Nigeria can get out of recession


The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udoma, said on Tuesday in Abuja that massive investment in infrastructure is the surest way to get the country’s economy out of the current recession.

Mr. Udoma, who was addressing the annual forum of laureates of the Nigerian National Order of Merit, during their 9th Award Winners Lecture, said the government was looking at various strategic ways of mobilizing revenue to get the economy back on the path of sustainable growth.

Kogi communal clash leaves two killed, 15 houses burnt


The Kogi State Police Command said on Tuesday that two people lost their lives in a communal clash in Ikende community in Bassa Local Government Council Area of Kogi State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, told journalists in Lokoja that the clashes occurred between the Ebira and Bassa kwomu speaking people of the community on November 26 and November 28.

Senate to investigate revenue generating agencies withholding govt funds


The Nigerian Senate is set to investigate the government’s revenue generating bodies suspected to have been involved in the practice of non-remittance – or under-remittance of revenues they generate to the treasury in violation of the law.

The resolution to investigate the agencies was passed on Tuesday, following a motion by Adeola Olamilekan.

Citing Section 80 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution which provides for remittance of all government revenues into the Consolidated Revenue Fund, Mr. Olamilekan, an APC Senator from Lagos State, expressed worry some agencies are mismanaging public funds and shortchanging government, despite the country’s economic woes, mainly marked by dwindling oil revenue.

Nigerian troops in Somalia have not been paid for 11 months


Nigerian troops have not been paid eleven months after they were deployed on peace enforcement duties in Somalia as Formed Police Unit (FPU) to assist the Somali police maintain law and order and provide cover for the country’s first democratic elections holding tomorrow. 

According to The Nation's Assistant Editor Seun Akioye, who was with the troops in Somalia,some of the Nigerian officers who spoke to The Nation in confidence said the security situation in Mogadishu is dire and that the troops risk their lives going out on patrols daily.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women one Amadi and Mama Esther – for allegedly abusing a nine-year-old girl, Joy Esemonu, in the FESTAC Town area of the state.

Punch Metro gathered that Amadi allegedly poured chemical on Esemonu, which made her sustain injuries in different parts of her body. Esemonu was subsequently led everyday by the suspect to a pedestrian bridge in the FESTAC area where she was made to beg for alms from passersby.

Only 13m individuals, enterprises pay taxes regularly – FIRS


Data from the 36 States Internal Revenue Service (SIRS) as at November 2016 shows that 13,034,222 million individuals and enterprises pay taxes regularly.

The executive chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and chairman, Joint Tax Board (JTB), Tunde Fowler, made this disclosure in Abuja yesterday.

He said Lagos State tops the list with 4,088,128 million taxpayers, while Gombe State, the lowest, has 33,000. Breakdown of the data reveals that 8,550,643 million individuals pay taxes as well as 4,483,579 million enterprises.

In 2016, Nigeria has lost 130m barrels of crude oil to Niger Delta militants


Nigeria has lost over 130 million barrels of crude oil from January to November this year to the activities of 32 militant groups in the Niger Delta region since the resurgence of militancy in the oil-producing region in 2015, the Vice-Chairman of the Security Subcommittee of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mr. Shina Bankole, has said.

Recession: NYSC urges subsidized feeding for Corps members


The Enugu State Command of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has asked the state government to subsidize the feeding of the Corps members, because of the increase in their population.

According to OK magazine Angelina then softened her stance and bypassed their attorney middlemen, to call Pitt directly and asked for a ‘temporary truce’ after she realised how much their kids want them together for the holidays.
