US Government seeks to increase bilateral trade with Nigeria


The United States Government has expressed its readiness to increase her bilateral trade with Nigeria.

To this end, the Commercial Service of the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria has hosted its annual networking with the USA Appreciation Forum (NUSA) and international partner awards.

The event which took place in Lagos has over 400 local business executives in attendance.

Alert! Suspected case of polio discovered in Kano


Not less than three weeks after the discovery of three new polio cases in Borno State, there is growing concern and anxiety among residents of Takai and Tofa Local Government areas of Kano State over the disease.

This development followed the discovery of what health officials described as “compatible polio” cases in each of the council areas. The officials made the discovery during polio immunisation in the state.

During a routine visit by members of Journalists for Health to the affected councils in the state, it was learnt that the suspected compatible polio cases were discovered during the April round of Immunisation Plus Days.

Bauchi State | Canada to spend N6bn on health and agriculture


The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Perry John Calderwood, has disclosed that Canadian government would spend N6 billion to improve the agriculture and health sectors of Bauchi state.

The high commissioner, represented by Counsellor and Head of Development Cooperation Global Affairs, Miss Linda Elrichs, disclosed this yesterday during an official launch of the Livelihood and Nutrition Empowerment (LINE) and the Bauchi Opportunities for Responsive Maternal Neonatal and Child Health (BORN) projects in the state capital.

Police says Army lied over Niger killings


The Niger State Police command yesterday said the Nigerian Army was being economical with the truth in its reasons for the invasion of Kpaidna and four other villages in Bosso Council of the state.

During the invasion last month, over 20 people, 11 of them soldiers, were killed, while several others were injured and property valued at millions of naira destroyed.

Following the incident, the state government set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to look into the remote and immediate causes of the disturbance and proffer recommendations on how to forestall future occurrence.

LAUTECH doctors protest over salary crisis


Resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso on Friday staged a protest against the decision of the Oyo State Government to pay half salaries to the doctors since January 2016.

Some of the placards displayed by the doctors at the school gate read, ‘Health service care must be accessible, affordable financially and acceptable’, Save Residency Training’, ‘IGR drive should not be at the expense of the citizens’, ‘No to half salary’, and ‘Do not starve our specialists any longer’.

The Nigerian Army said it had freed over two million women, children and adult males held captive by members of the Boko Haram sect in the North-East since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power.

The army said the feat was achieved after series of coordinated attacks and operations conducted against the terrorists.

Borno State | 5,000 Bama indigenes to secure town against insurgents


Around five thousand men from Bama in Borno State will secure the town against attacks by Boko Haram insurgents, it was learnt yesterday.

The people said that they had also contributed money to support the state government’s effort in reconstructing the town.

Bama, the second largest town in Borno, was the worst hit by the Boko Haram insurgency at the height of the terrorist group’s attack in the country as majority of the structures in the town were destroyed.

Port Harcourt to host Super Eagles‘ WCQ game against Algeria


Rivers State government has agreed to stage a 2018 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria’s super Eagles and Algeria in Port Harcourt in November, officials have disclosed.

The game is slated for the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on November 7 after earlier reports suggested the game will be played in Uyo, which hosted a recent AFCON qualifier against Tanzania.

MTN debunks reports they paid bribe to reduce NCC fine


South Africa’s MTN denied it paid a bribe to Nigerian officials to reduce its fine to 330 billion naira ($1.05bn) as part of settling a dispute over disconnecting unregistered SIM cards in the West African country.

MTN said in a statement on Friday there had been allegations that a top official in the Nigerian presidency took a payment towards reducing the fine.

IPOB blast Ebonyi People says they are myopic, they don’t behave like Igbos


The Indigenous People of Bifara, IPOB, has lampooned the people of Ebonyi State for spurning the sit-at-home order it passed.

The group had in a circular issued few days ago, asked Ndigbo nationwide to spend the day indoor in protest against the continuous detention of the leader of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Rotary donates $35 million to fight polio


Following three recent reports of new cases of wild poliovirus in Nigeria, Rotary has announced a $35 million funding for the eradication of the disease in Nigeria and other at-risk countries.

Of the sum, $8.15 million will go toward stemming the recent outbreak in Nigeria and countries in the Lake Chad Basin River including northern Cameroon, southern Niger, the Central African Republic and Cameroon.

Cameroon football star, Samuel Eto'o has been dropped by his club, Antalyaspor, after he claimed on social media that people didn't respect him because of his skin colour. 

According to AFP, the Turkish top flight said that Eto’o would be left out of the squad until further notice in a bitter row over comments on social media.

EFCC says they’ve Recovered Over One Billion Naira From South-South


Over one billion naira proceeds of corruption have been recovered from individuals in the South-South region of the country between January and September 2016, with 24 convictions.

This is according to the zonal head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ishaq Saliu.

He said this in Port Harcourt when some Niger Delta youths took a protest to the commission’s office over alleged lopsidedness in the anti-corruption campaign.
