Nigeria’s Ministers of Sports, Finance have cases to answer – Senator Ogba on #Rio2016 Performance


The Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Obinna Ogba on Thursday, lamented the poor performance of Nigerian athletes in the just concluded Rio Olympics in Brazil.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Ogba attributed the poor performance of the athletes to non-release of funds meant for the exercise, recalling that his committee had invited the Minister of Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalong who repeatedly told the committee that funds were released to that effect.

Breaking: Police uncovers Baby Factory In Abia State (Photo)


A baby factory has been uncovered by the Abia state police command. The baby factory was uncovered at the Ogbor-Hill area of Aba in Abia state.

The police say five pregnant women were rescued from the baby factory.

Abia police also arrested a 54-year-old man, Nkem Nwokocha, and his wife, identified simply as a nurse, who were said to be the owners of the baby factory.

Borno State | NSCDC arrests 40-year-old man for raping IDP


The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Borno on Thursday said that it had arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly raping an Internally Displaced Person (IDP).

Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, NSCDC Commandant in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that the 13-year-old victim from Chibok was staying with her aunt at the Colori Camp.

Ibrahim said that the suspect was arrested in Dala area of the state capital.

Osun State | 15-year-old nabbed for stealing cable wires


A 15-year-old boy, Ayo Oladele, was on Thursday brought before an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court in Osun over the alleged theft of cable wires valued at about N300,000.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Fagboyinbo Abiodun told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 21 at about midnight at the Halleluyah Estate, Osogbo.

Customs issues 24hrs automation for Cargoes to vacate Lekki deep seaport


The Zone ‘A’ Coordinator of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Assistant Comptroller-General Eporwei Edike, has said that cargoes should be leave Lekki deep seaport under 24 hours.

Edike stated this during an inspection tour of the Lagos Free Zone housing the sea port project and the Lekki Free Trade Zone on Wednesday.

The Customs boss said that his visit to the zones had to do with seeking avenues of increasing customs revenue at the free zones.

Rio 2016 Paralympics: Officials yet to name Team Nigeria


With barely two weeks to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, the Nigeria Paralympics Committee (NPC) has yet to name the members of the Team to represent the country.

The Games are slated for Sept. 7 to Sept. 18 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

However, the athletes for Para-powerlifting and para-athletics are currently camped in Abuja, while the Para-table tennis players are in Lagos training at the Knock-up Hall of the National Stadium.

Lagos Police arrests notorious cult group Kingpin


A notorious cult member top on the list of police’s most wanted criminals, Oriyomi Balogun, popularly known as J-Prompt, was among suspected criminals paraded by the Lagos State Police Command yesterday.

Police Service Commission to probe siege on Kwankwaso’s house


The Police Service Commission (PSC) has said it would investigate the circumstances that led to the blockade of the Kano residence of the former Governor of the state, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, by policemen, penultimate week.

The Chairman of the commission, Mike Okiro, said the commission would also look into the role of the Kano State Police Commissioner over the stoppage of a mass wedding event for 2,000 indigent citizens of the state.

UNICEF decries Boko Haram violence says it is taking ‘devastating toll’ on children


Years of violence by Islamist Boko Haram militants have taken a “devastating toll” on children living in the Lake Chad basin, the United Nations Children’s Fund has said.

The insurgency displaced 1.4 million children in Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger and left at least another one million trapped in areas that are hard to reach or under the control of Boko Haram, the agency said.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched investigations into how the Army spent an N5billion vehicles purchase grant received from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The Biafran Independence Movement has urged underperforming governors in the South-East to vacate their offices since they have lost focus and derailed from their political promises.

BIM also alleged that some of the governors were good at building and establishing industries and constructing roads on television screen, whereas those roads they claimed to have spent billions of naira to construct remained deplorable, few weeks after their inauguration.

The Federal Government will base the 2017 budget on an oil price benchmark of $42.5 per barrel. Oil price currently stands at about $48.9 per barrel.

A Fulani herdsman, Abubakar Usman, has been arrested for allegedly killing his 65-year-old mother, Khadijat, and his brother’s wife, Ramatu Shagari, aged 35.

Nigeria Banks clarify positions on forex sanction by CBN


Some banks on Wednesday clarified their positions on the alleged suspension from the foreign exchange market transaction by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over alleged non-remittance of the NNPC dollar deposits.

The affected banks expressed their stance in statements and e-mails to customers on Wednesday in Lagos.

The banks include the FirstBank Ltd., Fidelity, Keystone and Heritage.

LASU sanctioned 84 students over indecent dressing


The Lagos State University authorities (LASU) issued 84 students warning letters for indecent dressing and also disqualified a student who was among the candidate who was to contest in the forthcoming student union election.

According to the breakdown analysis, eight among the culprit are final year students,43 in 100level,20 in 200level,and three in 300level.
