Presidency says Buhari not Seeking Emergency Powers


The Presidency has debunked reports in the media that President Muhammadu Buhari is seeking emergency powers to tackle the nation’s economic challenges.

It, however, stated that the economic management team was considering several measures to urgently reform the economy, but is yet to communicate the measures to the President.

The U.S. Secretary of State, Mr John Kerry, on Tuesday said the fight against corruption has to be a global security of the first order In order to bring to an end violent extremism in the world

Mr Kerry was speaking during a courtesy visit on the Sultan at his palace in Sokoto.

Delivering a speech on Resilient Communities and Religious Tolerance in Countering Violent Extremism, Mr. Kerry said extremists do not only kill people but also turn the most vulnerable among the society into killers.

Federal Government Commences Construction Of Oyo-Ogbomoso Road


Residents, traders and members of the Oyo State government heaved a huge sigh of relief as the Federal Government has commenced work on the Oyo/Ogbomosho road.

At the flag off, Oyo State Governor, Mr Abiola Ajimobi, expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari, for sanctioning the construction of the Oyo-Ogbomoso end of the Ibadan-Ilorin expressway.

Describing good road network as an important prerequisite for a buoyant economy, Gov. Ajimobi admonished the contractor, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), to speed up work on the project to give the road users a breath of fresh air.

Nasarawa State | Government Denies Slashing Workers Salaries By 50 Per Cent


The Nasarawa State Government has condemned the action by the National Labour Congress (NLC) to declare an industrial action over the reduction of the workers salaries by 50 per cent.

This is according to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Nasarawa State, Yusuf Usman during an interview on Sunrise Daily.

An 18 seater bus built from scratch by former Niger Delta militants trained at Innoson Kiara Academy, an arm of Innoson Motor Manufacturing Company, Nnewi, is to be delivered to President Muhammadu Buhari through the Presidential Adviser on Amnesty Programme, General Paul Boroh (retd).

The bus was on display at Innoson Motors and the Niger Delta trainees were elated that the federal government provided them the opportunity to acquire skills that had changed their lives for the better.

Lagos State | Nigeria Customs Seizes 25,000 Bags Of Rice


The Nigeria Customs  Service (NCS)  has intensified its war against smugglers with the seizure of  over 25,000 bags of rice, it was learnt.

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, Ikeja, it was gathered, has over 11,000 bags of the seized rice in its store; while its Tin-Can Island counterpart, Apapa,  impounded about 14,000 bags of illegally imported rice from China.

Authorities in the southern US state of North Carolina said Monday they are investigating the death of a deaf man who was fatally shot after a trooper tried to pull him over for speeding.

Daniel Harris, 29, who used sign language to communicate, led trooper Jermaine Saunders on an eight-mile (13-kilometer) chase on Thursday that started on an interstate highway and ended outside his home in Charlotte, local television station WSOC reported.

The driver exited his vehicle in the neighborhood and an “encounter took place” that led to a shot being fired, North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Michael Baker said in a statement.

Mr John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, on Tuesday lauded the efforts of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, for promoting religious tolerance and understanding among Nigerians.

Kerry was speaking during a courtesy visit on the Sultan at his palace .

He said that the Sultanate Council was building a community of tolerance for peace, progress and political stability in Nigeria.

Man who had Sexual Intercourse with his daughter remanded in Prison


A 56-year-old man, Abdullahi Zakari, who allegedly had sexual intercourse with his 18-year-old daughter, is to remain behind bars pending the perfection of his bail condition, a Lagos court has ruled.

A Surulere Magistrates’ Court, which gave the order, said the man should be remanded in Ikoyi Prisons until the bail conditions were met.

The Magistrate, Mrs. M.I. Dan-Oni, had admitted the accused to a bail of N500,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

A 30-year-old man identified as Hassan Jamilu, who was paraded at a Gudu Upper Area Court sitting in Abuja on Monday, was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison for breaking into Shoprite’s cash room and attempting to break the safe.

Alhaji Umar Kagarko, who is the court judge, gave Jamilu an option of fine in the sum of N30,000 and warned him to desist from committing crimes, adding that the plaintiff, as a private organisation should file a civil matter for compensation.

United Nations to probe diversion of humanitarian funds in Northeast, Nigeria


United Nations yesterday said it would investigate alleged diversion of aids for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and other victims of terrorism in Nigeria’s Northeast.

United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel, Mr. Toby Lanzer, gave the assurance during an interaction with newsmen in Abuja following his recent visit to some communities in Borno State.

Responding to the question of alleged diversion of funds meant for the North East, Lanzer stated that the body would commence investigation the moment it established cases of diversion.
