An image, shared on Facebook by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department shows a little boy and girl in police uniform down on their knees next to a police car praying for their daddy to get home safe.

This comes in the wake of a number of brazen police killings sparked by the shooting and subsequent deaths of two black men by police officers in Minnesota and Louisiana.

Finance Minister reveals Nigeria is “technically in recession”


Nigeria is in technical recession, the finance minister, Kemi Adeosun, said Thursday. Appearing before the senate, Mrs. Adeosun made efforts to allay public fears about the implication of the country’s troubled economy, saying “things are tough”, but there should be no panic.

“Things are tough, but we are not ignorant,” Mrs. Adeosun. “I want to assure Nigerians the economy is in good hands and we are absolutely doing our best. We want to assure Nigeria we are on the right path, we are on the right track.”

A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced a 30-year-old bricklayer Jeopardy John, to three months imprisonment for stealing two packets of Maggi cubes. John had pleaded guilty to a three-count of criminal trespass, housebreaking, and theft.
“I am sorry for the act I committed and I am pleading with the court not to send me to jail.
“It was hunger that made me steal. For some time now I don’t have a job, please sir forgive me, and I promise not to steal again,’’ the convict pleaded.

President Buhari reveals talks with Militants


President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration is talking to Niger Delta militants through oil companies and law enforcement agencies to find a lasting solution to insecurity in the region.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the president on Thursday.

Buhari spoke at a farewell audience with Mr. Michael Zinner, the outgoing Ambassador of Germany to Nigeria at the State House, Abuja.

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Senate to screen and subsequently  confirm  Hon. Justices Ejembi Eko and Amina Augie as Justices of the Supreme Court.

Buhari in a letter to Senate President Bukola Saraki explained that the two nominees will represent North-central and North-west‎ respectively. President Buhari said, “In accordance with Section 231 subsection (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, I have the pleasure to forward for your confirmation, the nomination of the two nominees as Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,”

House Of Representatives Member, Adewale Oluwatayo Dies In Abuja


A member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Adewale Oluwatayo, has died in Abuja. He reportedly died on Wednesday, but information about the incident filtered into the National Assembly on Thursday.

The deceased, whose profile read that he was born in 1970, represented Ifako-Ijaiye Federal Constituency of Lagos State.

He was the Chairman, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government between 2004 and 2007 before serving as a Special Adviser on Education  to Lagos State Government from 2009 to 2011.

Dino Melaye, a senator representing Kogi west federal constituency at the national assembly, says the federal government will be committing a crime if it fails to totally implement the 2016 budget.

Speaking on the floor of the senate on Thursday, Melaye quoted Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, as repeatedly saying the allocation for constituency projects was N60 billion, as against the N100 billion passed by the senate.
“Madam minister, while  you were speaking on two different occasions, you quoted N60 billion constituency projects. The budget passed by this senate, the constituency project is N100 billion,” Melaye said.

Celebration as Appeal Court lifts ban on Hijab in Lagos public schools


There was wild jubilation at the premises of the Court of Appeal in Lagos State when the right to wear Hijab (Islamic headscarf) in public primary and secondary schools was granted on Thursday, July 21, 2016.

After the judgement, Muslim males and females were seen praising God and exchanging pleasantries.
Most of them were shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’, ‘Alihamdulilah’‎, meaning Allah is the greatest and all thanks is due to Allah respectively.

With the verdict, it means that Muslim students in Lagos State public schools have the right to wear Hijab on their school uniforms both within and outside their school premises without being punished or victimised.

Obafemi Awolowo University appoints Prof Elujoba as acting VC


Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife has on Thursday approved the appointment of Prof Anthony Elujoba as the new acting Vice Chancellor for the institution.

Elujoba of the Faculty of Pharmacy emerges as the institution’s VC barely 24 hours after the Federal Government ordered the Senate of the school to use its internal mechanism in selecting a new Vice Chancellor.

FLASH! Court Grants Fayose’s Ally Bail over N1.2bn Fraud


A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the release of an ally of Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, Abiodun Agbele‎, who has been in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission since June 27.

Agbele was arrested by the EFCC in Lagos on June 27 and has since been detained for his roles in the handling of over N1.2bn on behalf of Fayose during the Ekiti State governorship election in 2014.

The outgoing United States Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, yesterday, failed again to appear before the House of Representatives investigative hearing committee on the alleged sex misconduct involving three members of the House.

This is as the three members involved in the sex scandal accused the ambassador of racial discrimination, adding that the allegation, which they claimed never existed, was a plot to smear the image of the country.

Security Operatives Arrests Tompolo’s Allies


Security operatives have nabbed two associates of former militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.

Simon Bebenimibo and Bomboy Oluba were arrested on Monday in an operation reportedly carried out by troops in the Niger Delta area.

The Nation quoted security sources as saying that the operation, which was part of a special search for the operatives and leaders of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), was executed after a careful planning and a period of trailing the suspects.
