Nigerian Navy dismiss officer nabbed with Indian hemp

A Naval personnel allegedly found in possession of 14.5 kilogrammes of Indian Hemp (cannabis sativa) has been dismissed and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for prosecution.

According to a statement signed and issued by spokesperson of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft, Lieutenant Elizabeth Ibrahim, the officer was dismissed after he was arrested with the substance, summarily tried, and found guilty of the offence.

Federal Government bans helicopter shuttle from Kaduna to Abuja

The National Security Adviser, Babagana Munguno, has banned the planned helicopter shuttle service from Kaduna to Abuja by some helicopter companies.

In a memo banning the move, Munguno said, “In view of the closure of the airport, air travelers will be required to travel by road/train to Abuja from Kaduna International Airport. This will undoubtedly cause constraints on the movement of some passengers who will aim to travel using other means, notably the use of commercial ferry helicopters.

Governor Ambode: Lagos has earmarked N30bn to phase out danfo buses

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, at the weekend said that the proposed Bus Reform Initiative aimed at giving Lagosians an integrated public transportation system would kick start this year with a sinking fund of N30 billion.

The new initiative will phase out danfo buses as means of transportation in the state within the next two years.

DISCO staff electrocuted during illegal connection in Ondo

It was tragedy in Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area, on Saturday following the electrocution of an ad-hoc staff of the Ondo Business District of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC.

The incident occurred at the Government Reserve Area, GRA, located at Itanla along the Ondo/Akure highway, while he was trying to connect a wire from an electric pole.

Gunmen kill three herdsmen in Southern Kaduna

Unknown gunmen have killed two Fulani herdsmen at Unguwan Maiyashi village, Fantsuwam Chiefdom, in Jemaa Local Government of Kaduna State, while another was killed at the Madakiya community of Zangon Kataf LGA, both in southern Kaduna.

An indigene of Ungwar Miayasihi said that the incident occurred at about 4pm on Saturday, when the herdsmen were grazing with their cattle inside a bush.

Nigerian prisons holding 68,259 inmates as at March 2017 – Controller General

The Nigerian Prison Service has disclosed that over 68,000 inmates are accommodated in the prison facilities throughout the country as at March 2017.

The Controller General of Nigerian Prison Service, Jaafaru Ahmed, made the disclosure in an interview with the Economic Confidential.

Ahmed said the agency has reopened prison farm centres towards self-sufficiency in food production.

Fighters in Syria claims deadly Damascus bombings

The alliance of hardline fighters in Syria known as Tahrir al-Sham has claimed responsibility for twin bombings targeting Shia pilgrims in the centre of Damscus that killed at least 40 people.

“On Saturday… a twin attack was carried out by two heroes of Islam … in the centre of the capital Damascus, killing and wounding dozens,” the statement said.

The group, a large portion of which previously fought as an al-Qaeda affiliate, said the attack targeted “Iranian militias” and pro-government fighters in revenge for what it said was Iran’s role in supporting President Bashar al-Assad’s “tyrannical rule”, holding them responsible for “killing and displacing” Syrians.
