Lagos 50th Anniversary: Soyinka, Gbadamosi to head committe

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, and businessman, Mr. Rasheed Gbadamosi, have been appointed as co-chairmen of the Lagos at 50 Planning Committee.

According to punchng, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, during the inauguration of the committee on Wednesday said the celebration of the creation of the state would showcase Lagos in its full splendour.

The committee also has 10 others as members — Habeeb Fasinro, Chief Olawale Cole, Mrs. Sarah Boulos, Mr. Abimbola Obafunwa, Prof. Senapon Bakare, Mrs. Chika Balogun, Mr. Folarin Coker, Prof. Ademola Abass, Bolanle Peter and Mrs. Olufunmilayo Balogun (Secretary).

Simon Achuba from Ibaji LGA of Kogi East has been sworn in as the Deputy Governor of Kogi state after being screened and confirmed by the Kogi State House of Assembly. Achuba’s confirmation followed Governor Bello’s letter to the Assembly seeking the confirmation of Achuba as his deputy.

According to reports, journalists weren't allowed in to the venue of the swearing in because according to the armed security guards, the Gov said it wasn't a public function.

Court Bars NDLEA, AGF From Arresting or Detaining Kashamu

The Federal High Court, Abuja on Monday made an interim order restrain­ing the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and its ex-Chairman, Ahmadu Giade from arresting or detaining Senator Buruji Kasha­mu.

Kashamu is wanted in the US over his alleged involvement in illegal importation of prohibited narcotics into the country.

The court, after listening to Kashamu’s lawyer, Ajibola Oluyede, who moved an ex-parte motion filed in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/479/2015, yester­day restrained the FG from ar­resting the senator.

Kashamu, former Director of Mobilisation, People’s Democrat­ic Party (PDP) is now represent­ing Ogun East senatorial district at the Senate.

Yesterday was the celebration of the Lunar New Year, so here are five things that you might not know about the new year:

1. Although it’s commonly known as Chinese New Year, locals don’t refer to it as so.

Those who take part in the festivities in China call it Lunar New Year, as the lunar calendar is what determines the dates. The celebrations surrounding the holiday are called the Spring Festival.

2. Rather than having one day to ring in a new year, the Lunar New Year has 15.

The Chinese New Year celebrations begin the day before the start of the new year and go until the 15th day of the new year, meaning there’s plenty of time to party! In that time, the New Year is honored with parades, horse races, bazaars, time of worship, and other activities.

Court issues fresh arrest warrant on Tompolo, orders security agents to produce him in court

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, has issued a fresh warrant of arrest on former Niger Delta militancy leader, Government Ekpemupolo also known as Tompolo after he failed to appear in court today February 8th to take his plea on a 40-count charge of money laundering and fraud.

At the resumed hearing of the case, the presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba said Tompolo had “refused to honour an invitation for investigation. A new order for his arrest is hereby given,” he said

MIRACLE! Dead Child brought back to life [PHOTO]

Just as the Bible says he has given us the power to heal the sick and raise the death, this was demonstrated on Sunday, February 7, 2016, when a dead child was allegedly raised back to life at the Mountain Miracle and Liberation Ministries, a.k.a Liberation City.

The occurrence which was like a scene from a Nollywood movie left everyone in the church stunned. The 6-month old child said to have been ill for weeks was brought to the church by her parents for prayers. Unfortunately, the child gave up the ghost as soon as they arrived the church.

Her frantic parents eventually wept and pushed their way through to the podium where the man of God, Dr. Chris Okafor, ministered to other people, and he immediately took the child from them and prayed fervently. Then he dropped the child on the altar and commanded her spirit to come back and the child moved! The congregation exploded in tumultuous praise as the child continued to move and even later drank some water!

Governor Ayo Fayose: "Jonathan shouldn’t have contested the 2015 election ... It was a mistake"

Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has told online news site Premium Times that fielding Jonathan as the PDP’s presidential flag-bearer in the general elections last year, was a miscalculation.

“In the first place, we lost the election because we did not pick our candidate from the north, not because Jonathan as a person was bad. It was just a political miscalculation. Lassa Fever in Nigeria: Death toll rises to 101

The hemorrhagic Lassa fever virus has left more than 100 Nigerians dead since it staged a return in August last year,the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced.

The NCDC says the toll of confirmed and suspected cases of Lassa currently stood at 175 with a total of 101 deaths since August.

“As at today, 19 (including Abuja) states are currently following up contacts or have suspected cases with laboratory results pending or laboratory confirmed cases,” said the disease control center.

Haiti installs interim government as President Michel steps down

Report coming from Haitian leaders have signed an agreement to install a caretaker government as President Michel Martelly steps down amid violent protests and no successor in sight.

Under Saturday's deal, the interim government will run for four months before holding presidential elections by April 24 and transferring power to the winner in the following month.

"Despite this agreement, we will need to continue to remain vigilant because there are people who won't agree," Martelly, whose term comes to end on Sunday, said at an event with foreign diplomats at the palace.
