Mr Ebri Eteng, WASH Officer, UNICEF, Sokoto Field Office, says that UNICEF has planned to celebrate the World Toilet Day to ensure that everyone has access to a toilet by 2030, Yes they mean toilet! :)
Eteng made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Sokoto.
According to him, the World Toilet Day, which comes up on November 19, is a day to raise awareness and inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis.
“Today, 2.4 billion people are struggling to stay well, keep their children alive and work their way to a better future, all for the want of a toilet.
“Sustainable Development Goals, launched in 2015, included a target to ensure that everyone everywhere has access to a toilet by 2030, this makes sanitation a global development priority,’’ he said.
Eteng said there would be a statewide sensitisation meeting on Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) implementation beyond Tangaza Local Government Area of the state.
He said that there would also be a district level sensitisation for community leaders and religious leaders with the focus on increasing access to improving household latrines.
Eteng explained that UNICEF had planned to support three widows in each district communities, and build latrines for them.
“We intend to build latrines for the widows that would serve as models and while the meeting gets to its peak, we all move there to commission it for use, ’’ the officer said.
