Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Southampton on Wednesday night, has moved a potential Champions League play-off against them and Liverpool closer.
The win boosted the Gunners’ top-four chances, moving them to within three points of fourth-placed Manchester City. Liverpool are just four points ahead of Arsene Wenger’s men, having played a game more.
If Arsenal can close up the goal difference in their last three games of this season, an end-of-season showdown with Liverpool on neutral ground could become a reality.
Premier League rules state: “If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board.”
As it stands, Arsenal have scored three fewer goals than Liverpool, while both teams have conceded the same amount.
