The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has built 7,350 units of transitional shelter and kits to accommodate returning Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS) from liberated communities in Borno, northeast of the country and Cameroon.
In Bama town and Maiduguri Bakasi Camp, 2, 950 transitional shelter units were also completed by the UN agency for IDPs’ occupation.
UNHCR Country and Economic Community disclosed this at the weekend in Maiduguri, when West African States (ECOWAS) representative, Angele Atangana, paid an official visit to Governor Kashim Shettima at the Government House.
She said: “We have agreed at the UN country level to do a ramping up together with the Borno State government, as 3, 450 transitional shelter units have been completed for IDPs’ occupation at the Bakasi Camp and Bama township.”
She said the UN agency is also planning to build an emergency shelter in the newly liberated areas of Northeast sub-region, while 3, 000 shelter units competed for IDPs occupation at Bama.
She urged the Governor to support UNCHR’s intervention assistance so that the IDPs could be fully protected and accommodated.
Other protection humanitarian assistance, she said, include deliveries of non-food items, which comprise stoves, cooking pots and mattresses.
“The agency also prevents sexual violence in camps and the coordination and management of official resettlement camps for the returning displaced persons,” said the UNCHR representative.
Responding, Governor Shettima thanked the UN agency for the provision of temporary emergency shelter units for displaced persons in camps.
