Nigerian, Algerian arrested for planning to bomb Germany


An Algerian and a Nigerian suspected to be planning to carry out a terrorist attack have been arrested in the German city of Goettingen, officials said on Thursday.

The men, aged 27 and 23 respectively, were taken into custody in a 450-strong police operation that took place during the night.

‘223 students to one toilet’ in Kano public schools


The Kano state government has expressed concern over poor state of infrastructural facilities in public schools.

Speaking at a workshop organised by the ministry for local government and community development, Hafiz Abubakar, the deputy governor said the report of a survey showed that an estimated number of 223 students are sharing only one toilet in government-owned schools across the state.

He described the development as unacceptable, lamenting how it makes students prone to infectious diseases.

Buhari is Nigeria’s most credible brand – Minister of Foreign Affairs


President Muhammadu Buhari is the ‘strongest brand’ the country currently has to improve on its credibility.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Geoffrey Onyeama made this known when he addressed newsmen in Eke, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Thursday.

Passengers escape unhurt as tyre of Doha-bound plane burst at Lagos airport


Hundreds of passengers on Thursday escaped death when one of the tyres of a Doha-bound Qatar Airways aircraft burst while it was attempting to take-off at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

According to NAN, the incident occurred around 3pm.

One of the passengers, who spoke to reporters, said the pilot was already cleared for take-off by the air traffic controllers when they suddenly heard a loud sound.

Policemen harass youth corps member at Aso Rock gate


Police officers harassed Obasi Sunday, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, at the entrance of the presidential villa in Abuja on Thursday.

The incident happened about the time when members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) staged a protest to Aso Rock.

Sunday later told journalists that he was on his way to supreme court – his place of primary assignment (PPA) – when the officers stopped him.

Christianity under attack – CAN condemns DSS invitation of leaders


Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, on Thursday condemned the interrogation of four members of its Trust Fund by the Department of State Services, DSS.

The body said it is now obvious that “Christianity is under siege in Nigeria.”

Director of Legal and Public Affairs in CAN, Kwamkur Samuel, in Abuja said recent attacks had confirmed speculations that there were plans to turn Nigeria to an Islamic state.

His reaction follows invitation of BoT members of CAN Trust Fund who are also leaders of the National Christian Elders Forum by the DSS.

Muslim clerics commence 10-day prayer and fasting for Buhari


Some Muslims clerics in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Friday said they had commenced 10-day prayer and fasting for the health of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Malam Uma Bolori who spoke on behalf of the clerics said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri on Friday.

He said, ‘’Our prayer is what President Buhari needs from Nigerians rather rumours.

Dressed in red the members of the opposition EFF party attempted to disrupt his speech.

The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Julius Malema, shouted at Zuma as he attempted to deliver his State of the Nation annual address.

Malema said pointing at Zuma, who stopped reading his speech and took his seat as the house descended into a shouting match.

A furious mob lynched a suspected arsonist being held in police cells - before throwing her onto a bonfire

The 30-year-old woman was being held on suspicion of causing a fire that killed a two-year-old boy in Novo Aripuana, Brazil, on Monday.A  mob of around 500 residents stormed the police station and broke down the doors of the holding cell before dragging her outside on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Daily Mirror, locals torched impounded cars to start a makeshift bonfire and pulled the woman by the hair onto the roaring flames.

The management of Arik Air on Thursday said it would challenge the taking over of the airline by the Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) in court.

Ado Sanusi, senior vice-president, Arik Air, made the disclosure at a joint news briefing with Oluseye Opasanya (SAN), the receiver-manager, and Roy Ilegbodu, airline’s technical consultant.

AMCON had taken over the airline following the huge indebtedness of the company to both local and foreign creditors.

However, Sanusi said management of the airline had been served with a valid court order empowering AMCON to take over the affairs of the airline.
