Ekiti State | ‘Fake’ audio scandal rocks State Assembly


Ekiti State House of Assembly has been hit by crisis following the removal of the member representing Ikole Constituency 1, Gboyega Aribisogan, as Information Committee chairman.

Aribisogan’s sack and his replacement with the member representing Oye Constituency 1, Samuel Omotoso, is believed to be a prelude to his recall from the Assembly.

The embattled lawmaker was accused of holding secret meetings with Senator Buruji Kashamu, Lagos lawyer Femi Falana and other personalities perceived to be enemies of Governor Ayo Fayose.

Chinese companies to invest $70 Billion to Nigerian Petroleum sector


The Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, on Wednesday, said Chinese private sector companies had pledged an additional investment of $70bn to the Nigerian economy.

Kachikwu said this while addressing State House correspondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.


He said that the Council was briefed on the outcome of the ministry’s China roadshow which took place in January.

UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon's successor revealed


Portugal’s former prime minister Antonio Guterres was poised to become the next secretary-general of the United Nations following a decisive straw poll by the Security Council on Wednesday.

Guterres, who served as prime minister from 1995 to 2002 and was the UN’s refugee chief for 10 years, won backing from 12 of the 15 council members — most importantly from four of the five veto-holding powers.

Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin emerged from the council chamber along with the 14 other ambassadors to declare that Guterres was the “clear favorite” to succeed Ban Ki-moon as the world’s diplomat-in-chief.

Scottish Nobel prize winner ridicule Donald Trump


The Scottish-born winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry took a jab Wednesday at US presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has bragged that he was “smart” to avoid paying taxes.
“I am not very smart. The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) will run off with a third of it,” said Northwestern University professor Fraser Stoddart, referring to his portion of the eight million Swedish kronor (around $933,000 or 832,000 euros) award, which he shares with Jean-Pierre Sauvage of France and Bernard Feringa of the Netherlands.
“Did you all get that? I’m not very smart,” Stoddart added, to laughter and applause during a champagne-fueled press conference to celebrate the Nobel win.

FEC approves procurement of three 150 MVA‎ transformers for Shiroro, ‎Oshogbo, Ondo station


The Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, Mr. Fasola also that FEC approved the procurement of three transformers of 150 MVA‎ to be installed in substations in Shiroro, ‎Oshogbo and Ondo. According to him, the purpose was to expand the transmission capacity of electricity around the country.

World Health Organisation (WHO) warns of new cancer cases


The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of a 70 percent increase in new cases of cancer in the next two decades.

About 8.2 million people die yearly from cancer, an estimated 13 percent of deaths worldwide.

WHO noted that there are over 100 cancer types, each requiring unique diagnosis and treatment.

You must face trial over corruption allegation - Court tells Stella Oduah


A Federal High Court in Abuja has declined former Aviation Minister Mrs. Stella Oduah’s request to stop the Federal Government from investigating her tenure between 2011 and 2015 and prosecuting her.

Justice Adamu Kafarati who gave the ruling yesterday held that the fundamental right enforcement suit by Mrs. Oduah lacked merit and bereft of any cause of action.

Justice Kafarati upheld the objection raised by the respondents, to the effect that the court lacked the requisite jurisdiction to hear the case, which subject matter was outside the ambit of Chapter Four of the Constitution.

Federal Government to Buy Vehicles worth N3.5 Billion from Local Manufacturers


The federal government has given its nod for the purchase of 350 operational vehicles for the Nigerian Prisons Service, NPS. This followed a memo presented by the Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulraman Dambazzau (rtd) to the Federal Executive Council, FEC.

Briefing newsmen at the end of FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja on Wednesday, Dambaazzau who was joined by his colleagues, Mr. Babatunde Fashola from the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and Mr. Ibe Kachikwu from Petroleum Resources said that development was part of the effort to strengthen the criminal justice system in Nigeria.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Wednesday said religions abhor killing.

President Muhammadu Buhari is in possession of some letters, written by former President Goodluck Jonathan, to request “off-budget funds.”

This was contained in Buhari’s authorised biography, ‘Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria’, written by Prof. John Paden and presented to the public on Monday.

An online dictionary defines “off-budget funds” as funds not provided for or included in the regular Federal Government budget; funded by sources other than the federal budget.

Militants give conditions to Buhari for amnesty


A group of Niger Delta militants operating in Rivers State has made a 10-point demand that must be met before they will accept the amnesty offered by Wike.

The group, which identified itself as Egi Freedom Fighters, warned that it would reject the state amnesty programme, unless all the conditions were met.

The militants, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, and signed by their spokesperson, Jennifer Black, requested the rebuilding of houses destroyed during a military raid of Egiland.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has accused western powers of being a stumbling block to Nigeria’s plan to improve power output through the use of coal. The government also yesterday moved to consolidate the charges against Dasuki, barely 24 hours after the ECOWAS Court judgement Salihu Isah, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, said the government needed to fully understand the content of the court’s proceedings and judgement before reacting. “We cannot just react. We will first of all study the judgement to understand its content before taking a stand,” he said.

UK to assist Nigeria recover N500 Billion diverted oil bloc money


House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating alleged corruption, malpractices and breach of due process in the award of Oil Prospecting Licence, OPL, 245, yesterday said the United Kingdom Prosecution Service has agreed to help Nigeria recover $1.1 billion diverted oil bloc money. Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, Razak Atunwa, who disclosed this when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and representatives of Shell and Nigeria Agip appeared before the committee, vowed that all the funds meant for the federation account, would be recovered

Governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose, has declared himself “the real change”. The catchword ‘change’ was what the All Progressives Congress (APC) sold to Nigerians in the buildup to the 2015 general election, which it was largely successful in.

Kidnappers release Former Minister and Husband


The immediate past minister of environment, Mrs. Laurentia Laraba Malam and her husband, Mr. Pius Malam, who were kidnapped on Monday along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway have regained their freedom, the Kaduna state Police Command has confirmed.
