Olonisakin’s Cousin Killed in Boko Haram’s Raid on Nigerian Troops


A cousin of Gabriel Olonisakin, the chief of defence staff, was one of the soldiers killed in a Boko Haram attack on the army in Kangarwa, Borno state, on July 12, it has been revealed.

Leo Irabor, a major-general and theatre commander of the Operation Lafuya Dole, made the disclosure on Friday in Maiduguri while briefing the media on activities of Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

In his briefing, Irabor said: “Since our last meeting, the troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE have conducted various operations against the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT). Some of the major operations include the following:

Author of the plan to overthrow President Buhari Arrested


The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested one Jones Abari, aka Gen. Akotebe Darikoro, for the alleged mastermind of a hoaxed plan to overthrow President Muhammad Buhari by the military.

 A statement issued by an official of the service, Mr Tony Opuiyo in Abuja on Saturday said Abari was arrested in Yenagoa on July 21. Opuiyo described the suspect as the leader of the Joint Revolutionary Council of the Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force ( JNDLF). He said that Abari had confessed to other criminal activities which included a threat to launch missile attacks on selected targets in Abuja and Aso Rock. Others include writing threat messages to the management of the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) and the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) demanding for N500 million and N250 million respectively.

Rio 2016: FBI tip Brazil over arrest of suspected militants


The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation gave Brazil the tip that led to arrests this week of 11 suspected militants who had discussed a possible attack on the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, according to a Brazilian prosecutor.

In comments to several Brazilian newspapers published Saturday, Rafael Brum Miron, the federal prosecutor handling the case in the southern state of Parana, said the FBI had provided a brief report in which it identified at least six people it suspected as potential militants.

Munich Shooter has no relationship with Islamist - Police


The German- Iranian shooter who opened fire at a mall on Friday in Munich, has been identified as  18-year-old Ali David Sonboly. Ali Sonboly  shot dead nine people and injured at least 21 others. He was later found dead after fleeing the scene.

U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles crash out after Sudan defeat


Nigeria’s U-20 team will not be at next year’s U-20 AFCON, after they were beaten 4-3 at home by 10-man Sudan, thus losing the tie on away goals rule.

The Flying Eagles, who are the defending champions, had won the first leg 2-1 in Sudan.

Boko Haram Ambush: Missing soldiers, officers found in stable condition


The Nigerian Army has announced that some officers and soldiers who went missing during an ambush by Boko Haram have been found.

The theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor, had earlier confirmed that 16 men were missing.

According to Sahara Reporters, the Army Public Relations Director, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman issued a statement saying “Please recall that some of our troops were missing in action after an ambush at Guro Gongon on 20th July 2016.

Ribery, Alaba on target in Bayern win over Landshut

Abdulmunin Jibrin, former chairman of house committee on appropriations, says he is ready to substantiate his allegations against Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the federal house of representatives, and three other leaders f the house.

Following his removal as chairman of appropriations committee, Jibrin had accused Dogara; Yusuf Lasun, deputy speaker; Alhassan Ado Doguwa, house whip; and Leo Ogor, house minority leader, of padding the 2016 budget with N40 billion.

In a statement released through his lawyers on Friday, Jibrin urged the lower chamber to institute a special investigation so that he would have the opportunity to “testify and provide evidence against them”.

Air Force Plane Goes Missing With 29 People On Board


India on Friday mounted a massive search and rescue operation for an Indian Air Force plane that went missing with 29 people on board over the Bay of Bengal, Punch reports.

With concern mounting hours after its disappearance, five surveillance aircraft and 13 navy and coastguard ships launched the search for the aircraft, which vanished shortly after take-off from the southern city of Chennai.

Minister of Sports, Dalung reacts to Olympic athletes begging for funds



The Minister of Youths and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung, has reacted to the purported message being sent to the Nigerian Rio athletes concerning their trip the Olympics.

Dalung said that he regrets the embarrassment caused Nigeria by a letter which directed Nigerian athletes going to the Olympic Games in Rio to buy their own air tickets.

The minister claimed that the said letter was not from the ministry and vowed to investigate the writer.

He disclosed this in a statement signed by his media aide, Nneka Anibeze, which was posted on his Facebook account.

2016 Olympics: Embarrassing as Nigerian athletes go on social media to beg for funds (See Post)


Condemnations have continued to trail the delay by the Nigerian authorities in releasing funds to the country’s contigents, billed to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics, holding in Brazil between August 5-21, 2016.

Some Nigerian athletes billed to participate in track and field events at the Olympics, on Friday, took to various social media platforms and online crowd-sourced funding platforms to solicit for funds to fly them to the competition.

Some of the athletes who could not hide the shame of missing out in the competition, after about four years of preparation, owing to delay in releasing funds for them, begged well-meaning Nigerians to come to their rescue. 

Kogi re-run commences peacefully


Polling in Saturday’s legislative re-run election in Kogi began at about 8.05am in parts of the areas of the state involved in the exercise.

The exercise is being conducted in Kogi East Senatorial District, where the senatorial seat at the National Assembly and two House of Assembly seats are at stake.

The state constituency seats in the contest are for Ofu and Idah, both in Kogi East.

APC says Gov Wike is responsible for INEC office fire


The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, has urged security agencies to hold Governor Nyesom Wike responsible for Friday’s arson on Independent National Electoral Commission’s office in Bori.

This is contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday by the Chairman of APC in the state, Chief Davies Ikanya.

INEC office in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of the state was gutted by fire on Friday.

The party alleged that the election umpire’s office was burnt down by hoodlums suspected to be the Peoples Democratic Party members.

How two Brothers Kill two People to Implicate their Elder Brother in Inheritance Tussle (PHOTO)


In a wicked attempt to implicate their eldest brother over a family inheritance, two brothers, Saidi and Idris Amadu, from Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, have confessed to killing a woman, Rohimat Kehinde, and a young girl, Fasilat Azeez.

The suspects said they were angry at their late father for giving Ayodele 40 cows and gave them 10 cows each as their own inheritance.

According to Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Okaula, the suspects stated that they, in the company of a fleeing suspect, Quadri Ayodele, killed the victims and pulled their corpses close to the residence of Ayodele to implicate him.

Punch gathered that Ayodele — on the discovery of the corpses near his house — was arrested, charged to court and remanded in prison custody.
